Sorry, Waluigi fans. It looks like The Goblin in Purple will be an Assist Trophy. With the Mario Roster currently boasting 5 people (not to mention characters like Yoshi and Wario who are totally Mario characters, but have spun off into their own franchises) it really didn’t make sense for Waluigi to come in and play ball. I think this was always his destiny, and at least it’s safe to say he looks great in HD!
I hope fans aren’t too bummed out, but remember: The Assist Trophy is a way to see your favorite characters come to life in Smash, even if they’re not full fighters. I couldn’t have been happier to see Jill from Drill Dozer in Brawl, even if she was just an Assist. I didn’t think I’d even get that.
What do you think about Assist Trophies? Happy to see Waluigi return his racketing ways as one? Comments and stuff go below!
Returning to Smash once more is the Home-Run Bat. A favored weapon amongst those who still use items, the Home-Run bat is the epitome of high-risk, high-reward. It leaves you vulnerable with a monstrous wind-up time, but anybody still standing in it’s path when the fighter takes a swing is sent flying into the ionosphere. Now that it’s returned, it’s sporting a more regal, almost trophy-styled look. Some glowing yellow will add to the stylishness of it as well.
In the screenshot above we can also see the return of the black and red “Crack” effect. Sakurai showed it off in an earlier screenshot of the day saying that it shows up in moments when a hero is about to say goodbye to a stock.
And here we see the after-effect of the bat: complete annihilation. Donkey Kong’s gonna need a new set of ribs after that hit!
What do you think of the new design? Leave your comments below!
I realized that I had skipped Zelda with everything going on in December, so I’m here to right that wrong with a piece on her and her JoJo-tastic poses!
Interestingly, the announcement of Zelda had now accompaniment of Sheik. I’m pretty sure it went down like that with Brawl too, and I get that they’re treated as different characters for a lot of reasons, but it’s still just kind of weird to me, you know?
So far her moves, while more dazzling, appear to be mostly unchanged. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of balance tweaks she gets, especially in the speed department. She’s always been a powerhouse to be reckoned with so I’m intrigued.
You’ll note she’s in her Twilight Princess/Ocarina of Time style get-up. While she looks great, I am just a skosh disappointed she’s not looking like her Skyward self. Hopefully that’ll be some alternate costume potential.
The Nintendo Princess roster has just about reached it’s cap. One can only hope for Midna but… more on that later…
King DeDeDe is one of those characters that I just loved, even though I was apparently playing him wrong. Apparently you’re supposed to just chain-grab with him a lot. Me? I had fun throwing his hammer around and posing for the camera. Silly me, I guess?
Anyhow, The King in Red is back with better visual fidelity, animations, and an improved rocket hammer! Hopefully we’ll see him get a few gameplay changes like Bowser, who is now faster on his feet and able to throw out sweet drop-kicks. I’m not saying DeDeDe needs too much balance change, but it would be odd for him to remain the heaviest character when other big guys get so much more spring in their step.
Not much is known about this expressive combatant from the Kirby series in terms of changes. At present we’ll just assume he’s a better looking version of himself from Brawl.
What do you think, though? Are you glad to hear DeDeDe’s right back at ya? Anybody else you’re looking forward to? Leave a note in the comments below!
I have a straight crush on Rosalina. She’s the epitome of a smart, classy, powerful woman. She isn’t overly flirtatious, she isn’t some cold-hearted bad-ass, and she never, ever gets kidnapped. She rules a flying space station, and oh yeah, she’s like 7 feet tall.
And she’s finally in Smash Bros.
She’s been towards the top of my most wanted list for a while now. I play her in Mario Kart, Super Mario 3D World, and I’ll play her in any party game they want to throw her in. And now? I just might main her in Smash.
Rosalina looks like an interesting character, judging from her announcement trailer. Her key “gimmick” seems to focus around the use of a Luma, a star-shaped critter from the Mario Galaxy series, as a sort of extension of herself. If I were a JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure fan, I wouldn’t put it to far to say it’s her stand. She summons it, and she can direct it from afar to do her dirty work. If it gets knocked out? Simple enough, just summon a new one (presumably). She’s one part Ice Climbers and one part Olimar/Pikmin.
Another interesting facet of her is her deflection that seems to bend physics around her. She can summon items to her location (which I love, as an item-hog), and she can redirect projectiles around her, presumably maintaining their direction and velocity. The trailer shows a lot of different abilities for her, and it’s hard to get a pretty hard hit on what it is exactly that she does, but the folks over at Smash Boards have done a great job analyzing her moveset further!
There’s no word yet on her Final Smash. I’m assuming it’s going to involve summoning down the Galactic Observatory from space to blow up the stage, but honestly that seems a little too easy. I look forward to seeing what she can bust out when the Smash Ball is in her control.
The roster is proving to be a personal favorite, as they’re picking all of my most wanted characters (and even one I didn’t know I wanted as badly as I do!) What do you think of the first newcomer announced since Wii Fit Trainer?
The Item Capsule is nothing new, although the squat design is quite adorbs. It is, however, in need of a bit of repackaging, I think.
In the last Smash Bros, we saw crates and barrels of goodies turn into presents and steel containers to better fit the mood of stages they appear on. I’d love to see more of that kind of customization in those items, as well as in the capsules themselves. Furthermore, a little bit of player customization in terms of gameplay. Perhaps it’s more fun to have an “All Capsule Surprise” match where every item has to be busted out of capsules, rather than just dropping in by themselves. Perhaps explosions could be turned off for those so-inclined to do so. It’s not much, but the more customization, the better off we can be!
A long while ago there was a teaser image on the Smash Bros Miiverse Community featuring Kirby with a hammer. The background of that image was a of a gorgeous celestial sight we hadn’t yet seen in Smash Bros. 4, and there was a strangely familiar glow to Kirby’s body. Now we know we were right when we thought it was a hint for a Mario Galaxy stage! This one is based loosely off the Gateway Galaxy stage, as evident by the large house and twisty dirt road. This one doesn’t feature all the same terrain, as it appears a small forest has sprouted up in the background!
There was a secondary post in this weeks mention of a Mario Galaxy stage, mentioning that there was relative gravity to the stage. If you look you can see how the stage has a curved surface, as opposed to the flat ones we’re used to. But you don’t remain straight walking up and down that hill like you might in the hills on Yoshi’s Island and in Distant Planet stages. Instead, characters will find gravity pulling them always towards the center of the planetoid, and thus if you’re standing on, say, the left edge, jumping will not take you straight up from the perspective of your TV, but will take you away from the center of the planet, just like it would in Mario Galaxy! Now, if you haven’t played the titular game from the level, you might find this more than disorienting, but if you have, you may just find this to be a unique experience for Smash!
References to the Mario Galaxy series include the Face Ship, Captain Toad’s ship, and Bowser’s star-bound Air Ships. I have yet to see any signs of the star-eared bunnies, but there are some strange planetoids floating on just the right edge of the topmost image. Whether those are part of the background or something that interacts with the players is unknown thus far. There’s also a few neat little platforms that serve platformy purposes! I’d imagine they move around but I don’t know. There’s also speculation that the stage itself moves round, but we’ll see about that! If it does, I wonder if our perspective will be forced to rotate with it or if it’ll be like running on top of a giant hamster wheel.
The Music Wishlist for Gateway Galaxy
It’s to be noted that I originally had a lot more music, but the more I went through the Galaxy albums, the more I realized that everything else should get shoved onto it’s own stage, and this should be all exclusively the brilliant orchestral tracks that we got from two of the greatest video games ever put to disc. I kept a few extras, but this list is extensive so prepare for a lot of good music after the jump!
The hero of the human realm in Kid Icarus: Uprising, Magnus is an imposing figure. The obvious problem we run into is that he’s “just another big sword fighter.” This is true, and honestly there’s not a lot to go off of in terms of super specific signature moves. He’s got a pretty good dash smash that ends with a spinning kick that you execute in Uprising, and he’s perfect to have a few more of the game’s weapons added in as special attacks. Maybe a Twin Bellows Canon or the Poseidon Canon could be unleashed for some range coverage! Also, remember that Captain Falcon was a head in a car before Smash Bros. developer Masahiro Sakurai transformed him into the Falcon Punching, Falcon Kicking tour-de-force that we all love. Plus, Magnus is one of Sakurai’s characters, being that Sakurai developed Kid Icarus: Uprising. When I try to think of other Smash potential to come out of Kid Icarus, all I can find are good Assist Trophies and stage ideas; Magnus is the most terrestrial, recurring character in the game and is a right fit for Smash.
You’ve got me on a Final Smash, but hey, they pulled Luigi’s out of nowhere, so sky’s the limit. In Kid Icarus: Uprising, he has a connection of some sort to the Dark Lord Gaol. During one sequence, the two once enemies fight together, so perhaps that could somehow be related. Or he could bust out one of the game’s signature vehicles and ride around the stage, namely in the Aether Ring!
Magnus wasn’t really around long enough to get a proper alternate costume, so I think this is a great place to get more creative with the design! Personally I’d want to see some sort of Centurion Strongarm outfit for him, or one of Palutena‘s other soldiers.
I recently realized this is only the second wishlist character I’ve done. I’m trying not to just spam this with a wishlist of random characters, but I’m trying to really, practically sit down and imagine what they’d do and what purpose they’d serve. How do you think I am with Magnus? Too obscure for a full character? Is he destined for an Assist Trophy? I’d love to hear those comments below!
With the recent announcement of Sonic returning to Smash Bros for WiiU and 3DS, there was much excitement that the speedster would be back for another round. Me? I’m a stage guy more than anything, so I decided to dig up all the video footage and screenshots I could, add a little digital duct tape, and try and figure out just what is going on in Sonic’s new stage.
The new stage, clearly modeled after Sonic Lost World‘s Windy Hill level, appears to have a bit of a rolling structure. While trying to piece this screenshot together, I noticed some pieces weren’t lining up, and upon investigating the video I noticed that the stage is built on a rounded surface that rotates a bit with the camera. Whether just a change in perspective due to focusing on one character, or an overall camera tilt, I am unsure. A fully circular stage with a central gravity that tugs you back to the middle would be incredibly unique, but would it be a Sonic stage when it could be a Mario Galaxy stage?
There’s really not much else to notice yet. There is likely more to do to the left and right; you can see a swinging platform on the right on the peak of it’s swing. I also imagine there’s more going on to he left. I hope we get a better screenshot because this is only making me more curious! At this point this stage is either going to be an auto-scroller like Mushroomy Kingdom, or it’s going to be SmashU’s Hyrule Temple.
Just what would a Sonic Lost World stage sound like? Let’s pick out a few likely candidates and personal favorites and lay ’em out under the jump!
Mario’s oldest rival, Sonic the Hedgehog, returns in the next Smash Bros. games, and while it’s not exactly unprecedented or unexpected, it’s always nice to see a confirmation via new screenshots and videos.
Our heroic hedgehog looks great in HD, as you’ll see in some of the shots below. The art direction for the new Smash games seems to really be bringing the best out of some character designs, allowing for them to have color without sacrificing detail. It’s far and above the drab palette of the Brawl incarnations.
We’ve also seen our first video footage since the initial launch trailers for the next iterations of Smash. It’s not much, but it helps get a sense of Sonic’s speed and the (albeit subject-to-change) tweaking with his moveset. Also, the super-clever will notice a stage that appears to be based on Sonic Lost World, coming soon to Wii U and 3DS.
So what does Sonic returning mean? On the obvious level, it brings us to two third-party characters, which is the same number Brawl had. But it also opens the door for Solid Snake to return, should he so choose. I always felt three was the lucky number for third party characters, so if Snake comes back, I predict that’ll be it. If not, we may still be able to squeeze in one more! Just who could it be… (Protip: We’ll discuss this later!)
Sonic’s stage on the Wii U comes to us from Sonic Lost World, but what about his 3DS stage (assuming he gets one)? I was really hoping to see this on the WiiU, but considering Lost World, I’ll have to take a silver medal and hope for a stage based on Sonic Colors on the 3DS Smash. Tropical Resort is, visually, one of my favorite locations in a Sonic title. A combination of Casino Night Zone, and a resort beach, it pretty much has all the bright colors set against a dark, spacey background that I could ever want. But if that wasn’t enough for me to want to see, I’d love to hear that gorgeous theme song as well. I’ll probably talk more about these and some other choice tracks in a future post, so stay tuned!
Visually, I want to see the team do more with our blue hero than they did in Brawl. For palette swaps, we saw a Sonic don a pair of colored bracers and tint his blue fur towards the color of the overall re-color. It looked kind of gross, especially for the green swap, and didn’t feel very inspired. Considering we’re not going to fit in every Sonic character ever, it would be nice to at least see color swaps that reflect the designs and colors of Tails, Knuckles, Sonic, Silver, and even the likes of Espio and (If you’re feeling particularly cruel) Amy. I’d love to see an alternate costume for Sonic that replaces him with Metal Sonic. His voice could either be removed completely, or replaced by a synthesizer that gives him all the same dialogue through a robotic voice. It’s a bit of a reach for an alternate costume but the only other choice really is to put him in some random costume pieces.
I for one welcome back ol’ Blue, but what do you think? What would you like to see changed up about him? Hit me up in the comments and let us discuss!
